In 4 steps to the perfect engagement ring!

Which type of engagement ring to choose? In what color will you choose the diamond? Does the engagement ring need to have a diamond? Will you choose the ring band in white, yellow or red gold? All things you need to ask yourself before buying a ring. But do not worry we have a little more explanation for all these questions so your choice will become easier!

The most classic form of an engagement ring remains the classic solitaire ring with one gemstone, usually a diamond or brilliant. In this traditional form of engagement ring, the ring band is white or yellow gold colored. But that doesn’t mean you have to listen to that. We guide you through four steps to choosing the perfect engagement ring for your partner.

Step 1: Determine your budget

The budget is immediately the least fun but not least unimportant choice when buying an engagement ring. It quickly makes things a whole lot easier and clearer. By setting a budget you can start looking much more focused, and immediately exclude several rings or diamonds. Also for the seller this immediately makes a lot clearer and they can advise you much more specifically. In addition, when shopping online there are filters to search only within the budget.

The purchase of an engagement ring is often very expensive. Therefore, know well in advance what kind of ring you would like and what your financial possibilities are.  But of course, always keep in mind that the price tag is not illogical. An engagement ring is a very special ring that your partner will wear every day for a long time. So you better choose a durable ring that will stay beautiful for at least a few years.

Step 2: What precious metal and color do you choose best?

After the budget, start with the ring itself. What color will the ring be? And what precious metal may the ring be made of?

The most common metals for an engagement ring are platinum and white gold. Of course, the choice of precious metal depends entirely on your partner. If your partner usually wears silver, it makes more sense to choose a platinum or white gold ring. If your partner wears more colored metals, then you better choose a yellow gold or red gold engagement ring.

Platinum has a silvery-white color, but unlike real silver, it lasts much longer. If platinum rings are exposed to shocks, the ring may deform slightly. A golden ring is more likely to lose material when subjected to light shocks. This causes platinum rings to be 50% more expensive on average than an 18K gold engagement ring. Carat refers to the purity of the gold. For example, 18K gold is purer than a 9K gold ring. Yellow gold and red gold are of course also chosen. An engagement ring can also contain different precious metals and thus become very unique. If you like to keep the ring subtle and sleek, yellow and white gold is ideal.

Step 3: The choice of the type of ring

Besides the color of the ring, it is of course also very important to determine what kind of ring suits your partner perfectly. There are a lot of different types of engagement rings. Some couples prefer, the classic solitaire, others like to have a vintage, modern or exclusive ring. We list a few types of rings for you.

The halo engagement ring

A halo engagement ring consists of a central diamond with smaller diamonds around it. That way, the diamond appears larger. A halo ring is becoming very popular and is seen as a real eye catcher.

The trilogy engagement ring

The trilogy engagement ring, as the name suggests, has three stones on the band. These three stones symbolize “the past, the present and the future. You are free to choose the size of the three gemstones. Usually the middle stone is chosen the largest. You can choose the gemstones in different colors to give the ring extra character.

The solitaire engagement ring

As the last type of ring, we highlight for you the solitaire engagement ring. This ring is very simple, classic and above all loved by everyone. A solitaire has been considered the most popular engagement ring for decades. The ring is made with a white gold or platinum band.

Step 4: Choosing the diamond or gemstone

When choosing the perfect diamond for your engagement ring, it is helpful to know the four C’s: carat, cut, clarity and color. Although there is no absolute right or wrong when choosing a diamond, it is important to pay attention to this.  The ideal choice in our view is the right balance between the four.

Carat is probably the best-known C of the four. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, which usually also determines its size. The global average weight of a diamond is between 1.00 and 1.09 carats. The higher the carat, the higher the weight, the larger the diamond (usually) and therefore the higher the price of the ring.

The next element that is very important in the choice of the diamond is the choice of the cut. The gemstone that is usually chosen for the engagement ring is a brilliant, a round diamond with a high brilliance. A timeless and elegant ring that knows how to charm many. In addition to a round diamond, you can also choose from alternatives such as a heart-shaped, pear-shaped or Princess cut diamond.

The clarity of the diamond is a little more profound, it is determined by the number of bumps in the diamond. The more imperfections a diamond has, the less it is worth. We recommend that you choose a diamond that scores at least VS2 or SI1 on the clarity scale.

Finally, you have the color of the diamond. This usually differs very little. Yet it is not unimportant. Because the color of the diamond also determines the price. The more color intensity the diamond has, the more expensive it usually is. So it is definitely worth finding out which color class you like best, and how much you want to spend on it. We recommend the G color and the H color on the color scale. G is slightly yellower in color.
